Shay Hengen

Chlorophyll / Algae Toxin Analyst
Marine Taxonomist

Ms. Hengen is a Marine General Taxonomist, originally from Orofino, ID, and has been identifying marine invertebrates for six years. She received her B.S. in Environmental Science (Marine Ecology) from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA and did most of her undergraduate studies focused on Marine Biology at San Diego State University in San Diego, CA. She participated in the Zostera Experimental Network where she studied the effects on epifaunal biodiversity change due to seagrass habitat fragmentation using taxonomic analysis in Korpoström, Finland at the Skärgårdscentrum Korpoström. Ms. Hengen conducted research at the Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory in San Diego, CA on the feeding habits of an intertidal species of gastropoda where she gained experience in chlorophyll-a and stable isotope analysis as well as intertidal sample collection, sample sorting and experimental design. Before moving to Moscow, she studied at the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, WA where she used taxonomic analysis to determine biodiversity change in the Tacoma Narrows due to habitat disturbance, as well as assisting with, and performing, wetland mitigation, delineation, and restoration projects throughout the Pacific Northwest
