Data Technician

Location: Moscow, ID
Status: Hourly, up to 40 hours per week
Duration: As soon as possible through December 31, 2010.
Pay Rate: $8 - 11 per hour

Description:
A data technician is required to participate in data entry and database stewardship activities. Responsibilities will include data entry and manipulation of spreadsheet formats for conversion of data into relational database tables. This activity also requires quality assurance and quality control of data to ensure the accuracy of the database for future analytical analysis and reports.

The work is part of a program to complete analytical verification of Dreissenid presence in water samples utilizing PCR testing. Analysis will include water samples from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's (BOR) high risk waters in the 17 western states. Some travel to Denver, CO and/or other regional offices may be required.

Requirements:
Solid experience with spreadsheets and databases is required, along with a biology background. Attention to detail is a must, along with a desire and ability to work with numbers and data for long periods of time. All work will be performed at EcoAnalysts under technical oversight from Reclamation personnel in Denver. Excellent communication skills (phone and email) are required to stay connected to the team and the Supervisor in Denver.

The duty hours are during normal business hours Monday through Friday.  This position will normally be 40 hours maximum in one week, but the number of hours available to be worked is contingent on the abundance of samples collected. Major Position Duties
The primary duties of this position are the identification of marine benthic invertebrates and data analysis. We work in a production environment where accuracy is critical and speed is imperative. The successful candidate will also teach marine taxonomy to existing freshwater taxonomy staff members who have experience with estuarine samples and taxa, and the desire to expand their knowledge and skills.

Qualifications
The majority of our projects come from the coasts of North America, so the successful candidate will be required to know and learn a diverse range of marine fauna. Experience in polychaete worms and/or mollusca as well as a combination of the following is preferred: Porifera, Cnidaria, Polycadida, Nemertea, Sipunculida, Echiura, Phoronida, Brachiopoda, Ectoprocta, Crustacea or Urochordata.

The successful applicant must have a good work ethic, be able to meet deadlines, be willing to go the extra mile, and work well in small groups as well as independently.

Minimum educational qualifications are a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, including coursework in invertebrate zoology, marine biology or oceanography. We also require at least five years of full time experience working in marine taxonomy. Preference will be given to applicants with at least two years of identification experience in a production taxonomy setting.

Compensation
Salary and benefits are dependent upon experience and qualifications. Benefits include: flex time, vacation/sick time, health insurance (medical, vision, and dental) and an employer-matched investment fund.
